Machines That Can Sew A Cover Stitch

A Cover stitch sewing machine can sew a seam called a cover hem. Some are dedicated models and can only be used for cover hemming. Others are hybrid models that can sew overlock & cover stitch, these are usually called Coverlock, combo, or combinations overlockers.

Coverlock Combination Overlockers

Cover Stitch hemming is most popular at the moment, almost all fashion items constructed with stretch fabrics in the factory, will have been sewn using a cover stitch. 

Cover Stitch sewing machines are pretty unique in the way they can sew a hem for joining fabrics together on difficult to sew materials. There are four main stitch types a cover stitch machine can sew. If you choose a Coverlock (a combination overlocker), it can sew additional edging stitches.

Double Cover stitch: Using 2 needles and 1 looper to create a cover stitch, of two parallel lines on the fabric surface, the threads are interlinked on the reverse side. This stitch is very stretchy, and used on knit materials.

Triple Cover stitch: Uses 3 needles as well as the looper to sew three straight parallel lines, with interlocking thread on the reverse, I feel sure you will have seen this stitch many times before on sweatshirts, t-shirts and sportswear.

Double-sided Top Cover Stitch: A double-sided top cover stitch, on the other hand, features interlocking stitches on both the top and bottom sides of the fabric. This creates a near symmetrical, professional-looking finish on both sides, making it ideal for projects where both sides of the hem or seam are visible. It is also used on extremely stretchy materials with ease.

Chain Stitch: It creates a series of looped stitches that form a chain-like link on the reverse side of the fabric. A durable sewing technique used for seams that need to endure significant stress, such as in jeans and other heavy-duty garments. In addition to its practical applications, the chain stitch is also popular in decorative surface embellishing.
