Video- The darning embroidery foot for free-motion work
It is great fun to do free-hand embroidery with a sewing machine. The stitching is controlled by the movement of your hands while manually guiding the fabric to follow your inspirations for unique designs.
The darning and embroidery foot belongs to the most versatile group of presser feet. It is used for sewing large-scale embroideries, beautiful monograms or for darning holes and torn areas. For passionate quilters it's an indispensable accessory, e.g. for crazy quilting or free-motion quilting, also known as stippling.
Free-motion work requires a little practice, but with a few simple tips it's easy to create gorgeous, original stippling designs!
Fitting the free-motion foot
- Remove the regular zigzag sewing foot.
- Squeeze the darning/embroidery foot gently together, which lowers the arm enough, so it is positioned above the needle clamp screw..
- At the same time position the foot and attach it using the screw to the needle bar.
- Lower the feed dogs. Or attach a feed cover plate.
- Select a straight stitch.
- Keeping an even sewing machine motor speed, manually move your fabric smoothly with no sudden movements. Often a larger sewing bed or extension table makes the task more user-friendly.
