Fitting and using the Singer blind stitch foot
- Raise presser foot and fit the bind hem foot. It will usually clip on to place on the foot holder.
- Raise needle.
- Fold the hem to the wrong side.
- Pin or baste in position.
- Fold the hem backwards as shown.
- On the foot, loosen the screw and adjust the blind stitch width guide.
- Tighten screw.
- Turn the machine power on.
- Select the blind stitch on your sewing machine: On most machines, this is a special kind of zigzag stitch where, several straight stitches, are sewn go into the hem allowance, then a single zigzag reaches into the main fabric. The stitch might be labelled as "blind hem", "stretch blind hem", or shown with a special icon. This is usually presented as straight lines followed by a single zig zag stitch.
- Position the fabric so the folded edge runs along the guide of the blind hem foot. The straight stitches should land on the folded hem allowance. The zigzag stitch should barely catch the fold of the main fabric.
- Sew, allowing wide stitches to enter the edge of the fold. The straight stitches will be sewn on the underside of the hem.
- Turn fabric to the right side and press.
Troubleshooting hints and tips
-
Stitches showing too much? Decrease the zigzag width or shift the guide slightly, remember the stitch width can be adjusted.
-
Stitches not catching the fabric? Increase the zigzag width slightly.
-
Fabric slipping? Use a walking foot if your fabric is very slippery or stretchy.
