Bernina L 850 overlocker gives us precision, power, and effortless threading. A spacious work area, and the FHS leaves both hands free to guide fabric, the bright LED lighting make it ideal for garments, activewear, and creative projects. Plus, what most users will enjoy is the smooth, quiet sewing experience it brings.
The L850 is blessed with One-Step Air Threader for loopers and automatic needle threader, setup is quick and frustration-free. Use it's Bernina MTC for perfect over-edge balance, easy switching between needle changes for it's 18 overlock stitches, it delivers beautiful overlock finish on every fabric. From delicate silks and jerseys to thick denim and stretch knits, and all can be sewn at speed, with precision and ease.
The L 850 is the first of the Bernina L8 series overlockers, they are designed and built in Switzerland, and use a large sturdy platform, in fact the same as the top-end model (L 890). It's weighty at nearly 15kg and works best in a permanent position on a desk in your sewing room. Every thing is adjustable, stitch length, width, speed, differential feed, and it includes an extendable sewing bed, the L8 series are premium overlockers that delivers flawless results and are user-friendly.
Switching between 2, 3, and 4-thread stitches is quick and intuitive, giving you flexibility for everything from simple neat rolled edge seam finishing to decorative stitching and wrapped edges. When converting to overlock using 2-threads, the special tool that's needed on all overlockers to sew with two threads is built-in to the L850 and only needs to swing in to position, it's simple.
Air Threading System
Simple, but very effective with help from the foot control.
At the heart of the L850 is Bernina’s revolutionary One-Step Air Threading of the loopers, it cut time and takes the hassle away from threading your loopers.
Simply choose loopers using the dial behind the front cover, a quick press on the foot control powers the air suction, and offer the thread end in to the nozzle, watch as air fires the thread perfectly into place through the looper guides and looper eye, with no fiddling, no frustration.
No Stress Needle Threading
Need help while threading the needle eye, the L850 can help.
Combined with the automatic needle threader, very similar to the ones used on a sewing machine, this setup can thread the left or right needle and takes seconds to thread the needle eye instead of minutes, so you can focus on what you love: sewing.
When it comes to changing a needle, the L850 can help there too, the presser foot can swing to the left and out the way when replacing the needles.
Fine Tune Stitches with MTC
The Micro Thread Control feature lets you fine-tune the look of the overlocked edge.
MTC is a simple dial setting, which set the looper thread balance of the edge stitches while overlocking. It allows the user to fine-tune the amount of edge thread, to achieve perfectly balanced overlock edges, no matter the fabric thickness.
Powerful Smooth Stitching
Sew at a top speed of 1,500 stitches per minute.
The Bernina L850 overlocker sews even seams in record time. Yet it’s incredibly quiet and smooth. Which is only possible because of Bernina’s precision engineering techniques, using only the best metals with ground and polished finishes where needed. A half-speed switch lets the user set the machine to a slower 750 SPM when needed.

FHS - Originally used in a factory environment to make using an overlocker more efficient. The Free Hand System with knee lifter lets you raise and lower the presser foot while keeping both hands on your fabric, which is ideal for positioning fabric, and tricky corners. Another industrial feature we love, a quick tap with your heel on the foot control will raise or lower the needle position one movement at a time.
Large Workspace - We have previously mentioned the L850 size, which gives us a spacious work area and bright LED lighting make it easy to handle larger pieces and see every detail clearly. The slide-on extension table adds even more support when working on bigger projects, while the freearm design is perfect for sleeves, cuffs, and other tubular sewing tasks.
The Bernina L850 helps keep tools organised with storage of the most used accessories in the flip down front panel. Printed on the inside of the cover is a quick threading guide, with colour coded threading paths, if needed.
