The Bernina 480 is a brilliant all-rounder, looking cool with its silver front panel. It’s gentle enough for silk, smart enough for perfect quilting, and strong enough for ambitious projects like a denim jacket or a heavy-duty tote bag. Its ability to handle thicker materials is one of its key strengths, making it a fantastic long-term investment for a serious crafter.

It is powered by a computer-controlled motor, you can increase the foot pressure to help grip and feed thicker fabric stacks evenly. Internal mechanics and housing are robust, meaning the machine doesn't vibrate or struggle under load. It has the hammer mode to bash through thicker fabrics. 

Quilting is where the B 480 truly shines. Choose from 28 quilt making stitches, including the vintage hand-sewn quilt stitches #1305-1308. It is BSR - Bernina Stitch Regulator ready. The tech is built in, but the BSR foot is not included. The foot uses a sensor to control the stitch length for you, allowing for perfectly even free-motion quilting and stippling, even for beginners.

A quick press of the tie-off key, at the start and end of a seam, stops thread ends unravelling, and a press of the scissors key, will cut both the top and bottom threads, so you're ready to start your next seam, with no further actions needed.

While top-stitching, a press of the left/right arrow keys, move the needle to the left or right in 0.5 mm movements to align the needle to the correct position for hemming, or decorative top-stitching. Decorative stitches can be sewn at up to 9 mm wide, which really gives the beautiful built-in decorative satin stitches (my particular favourite is #402, stars #906, and fish #924) an impactful presence. 

The Extended Sewing Table (included) provides a large, flat surface for manoeuvring items. You can confidently sew curtains, pillow covers, tablecloths, and re-upholstery projects. 

Add lettering to towels, place setting, gift tabs, or cards. Choose from 5 fonts, with double-block and script italics being particularly effective when sewn out, for names or "Sewing by" tags. Upper and lower case as well as space's and punctuation are available.

The LCD touchscreen screen has an aspect ratio of 1:1, and to sew a buttonhole, simply, position the button on the screen and set the screen button icon to your button size, pop the buttonhole foot on and stitch away. When you're done, use the button program to sew the button on as well.
